Boilers and furnaces

Boiler-based heating systems are often mistakenly seen as outdated relics of the early 20th century. While many people view them as old-fashioned, boilers are still found in many Long Island homes, and they actually have some distinct advantages over other types of heating systems. Some boilers even offer highly energy efficient technology like the Energy Kinetics System 2000.

For those who are unfamiliar with boilers, the principle behind how they work is quite simple. An oil (or natural gas)-burning heater warms up a water boiler. The hot water then circulates through a network of pipes and radiators to warm up the building.

What Are the Benefits of a Boiler for Home Heating?

Why use a boiler instead of a furnace? Four benefits of choosing a boiler system include:

  • Radiant heat: Boiler heat is evenly distributed. It doesn’t cause the temperature variations that often occur with forced air blower systems.
  • Low noise levels: Boilers are quiet because they don’t have fans.
  • Better air quality: Boilers don’t circulate dust and allergens through your home like forced air furnaces do. They also don’t dry out your home’s air as much.
  • Easier maintenance: While boilers should be inspected annually, they have fewer moving parts and don’t tend to need as much maintenance as other types of systems.
  • Efficiency: In cold climates, boiler-based heat can be very efficient and cost-effective.

Are Oil Boilers Being Phased Out?

Pursuant to a 2023 NY law aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, oil boilers will no longer be installed in new buildings beginning this year. New oil boilers may be installed in existing buildings though, and we will continue to service them. There is no requirement to remove your existing oil boiler system at this time.

Should I Upgrade My Oil Heating System?

Today’s oil boiler systems are much more efficient than those of even a decade ago. If you have a newer system, there is probably no compelling reason to replace it. If you have an older system, we can replace it with an updated version – perhaps a combi boiler – that provides both home heating and hot tap water.

Signs that your oil boiler may need to be replaced include:

  • It’s more than 20 years old. Fifteen to 20 years is the typical lifespan of an oil furnace system.
  • Your system has broken down. If you need frequent repairs or boiler service, it may be time to think about upgrading.
  • Your oil bills are higher than expected. This is a sign that your furnace is aging, and its efficiency is diminishing.
  • You’re experiencing unusual noises or smells. Banging or hissing sounds indicate possible leaks or mechanical problems. Also, boilers should be odorless; if you smell gas or oil, shut down the system and call for service immediately.
  • You see water leaks. Leaks can result in serious property damage; if you see a leak, contact a service company as soon as possible.
  • Your boiler’s flame has turned yellow, orange, or white; any color other than blue on a modern boiler system’s flame means it’s not burning properly and may pose a carbon monoxide poisoning risk.

Do I Need a Boiler for My Home Heating?

There are always alternative methods of heating one’s home, but a boiler system may be the best option for a home that has radiators but no ductwork. This is especially true if you wish to avoid the expense and inconvenience of retrofitting for ducts and a forced air furnace. Oil boilers specifically may also be an excellent choice for existing homes that are off the grid or are in an area with no access to natural gas lines.
