What to Do if Your Air Conditioner Breaks Down

July 26, 2017 by Dennis Traina

What to do if your air conditioner breaks downIt’s not the time of year you want to see this happen: You turn on your air conditioner and nothing happens. Or your cooling system is making unusual noise or isn’t working as well as it should. You can unleash a string of four letter words, or you can do something to fix the problem. In extremely hot weather, losing air conditioning can sometimes be an emergency situation.
At Tragar Home Services, we’re home cooling experts and we install, service and handle maintenance for air conditioning systems. We’re cooling experts and we want to give you some tips on recognizing warning signs and what to do when your air conditioning system breaks down.

Air Conditioning Problem Warning Signs

If your air conditioning system suddenly stops working, there’s a very good chance that there were warning signs you may have missed. The San Francisco Chronicle lists several indications that you may be encountering trouble with your cooling system:

  • Your air conditioning isn’t blowing cool air.
  • It’s making unusual noises.
  • Your cooling costs are increasing.
  • Water is forming under the inside unit.

If your system isn’t blowing cool air or isn’t blowing at all, that could be an indication of a number of problems. If your system isn’t blowing cold, it may simply mean you need to replace an air filter or clean some coils. You might have an undercharged system or a slow refrigerant leak. Or if your air conditioner doesn’t come on at all, you may have a compressor that needs to be replaced, according to houselogic.com. The cost to replace a compressor can be expensive.
If your system is making strange noises, it may be a problem within the unit. If you hear a clicking sound, that could mean a relay may have failed and needs to be replaced. A high pitched squeal may indicate a fan needs to be replaced, and if your air conditioner rattles it could be a sign that the compressor fan is damaged.
If you’re seeing your cooling costs go up, it may be because your air conditioner is becoming less efficient. This can be because of bad wiring, weak airflow capacitor problems.
Finally, a water leak could come from an overflowing drain pan or clogged drain line. This type of problem can also do damage to the interior of your house.

Taking Care of the Problem

If you have a serious problem with your air-conditioning system, Tragar Home services can help. We offer emergency air conditioning service, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our repairs come with a 30-day guarantee.
If you lose your cooling system during a heat wave, be careful. The American Red Cross recommends monitoring weather reports and taking precautions. You should find places such as schools, libraries, malls and theaters that are air-conditioned. During heat waves, Nassau and Suffolk County and various towns will often set up cooling centers. Remember to drink plenty of water and make sure your family members and pets have plenty of water. If you see signs of heat-related illness seek medical attention immediately.
