Guests at holiday dinnerThe holiday season is upon us once again. Here on Long Island, it went from being unseasonably warm at points to plugging into colder weather… just to warm up again in the coming days. As a result, we may be fiddling with our home heating settings more before we settle into the winter months.

For many, the holidays mean hosting get-togethers with family and friends for Hanukkah, Christmas, Yule, New Year’s, and more. This can create a tricky situation when you’re trying to create an environment in your home that can accommodate a large group of people – especially with the door opening and closing as people arrive.

So, how warm is too warm? How cold is too cold? All these questions and more run through our minds. So, what should we do to create a comfortable home temperature?

How Cold Is Too Cold for Guests?

Having more people in a room is naturally going to make the room warmer; our natural body heat will just do that. As a result, you will want to lower the temperature in your home when you’re having several guests over. This could also be made more complicated if you are spending a lot of time cooking and baking leading up to company arriving… which could increase the temperature as well.

In order to adjust without making your home too cold, try lowering the temperature by 3 or 4 degrees. You can always lower a degree or 2 more if it feels like it’s not enough. If you’ve been cooking or baking for hours leading up to the arrival of your guests, you may also want to open a window or two to try to cool things down further.

How Do You Keep Your Home Comfy for Guests?

Keeping your home comfortable as your guests are there for an extended period of time can be a challenge. After all, if you are hosting a New Year’s Eve party, you may have guests coming in the afternoon and staying until after midnight… which is a long time to keep your home comfy for many guests.

As part of being a good host, it’s recommended you periodically check in with your guests to make sure they are comfortable. Depending on your home, you may need to crack a window or two over time for short intervals to help lower the temperature.

If your home struggles to keep the temperature high enough when people are constantly coming in and out during an open house type party, a portable space heater may be an option for a guest or two who is particularly sensitive to lower temperatures.
