leaves on the groundIt has been a few years since we had a really harsh winter, which unfortunately means that we are about due. That means it is time to find and remedy areas of heat loss in your home and make sure your existing HVAC system is ready for the challenging season ahead. This is especially true for those who have outside units that will be exposed to freezing weather.

How Cold Is Too Cold for HVAC?

Low temperatures present two primary risks for your HVAC system – freezing coils and thickening lubricants. Frozen coils can keep your AC from working properly, while thickened lubricants can take a toll on your compressor. Either one of which can lead to expensive repairs.

The temperatures at which your HVAC can safely operate vary according to model and how new the system is. Always be aware of and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for your specific unit. Generally, most units should not be operated when the outside temps are at 60 F or below.

How Do I Keep My HVAC from Freezing in Winter?

There are several steps you can take to prevent your HVAC from freezing up.

  • Make sure to change your air filters on a regular basis.
  • Clean your system’s fan of any built-up trash or detritus.
  • Check vents for any obstructions to airflow.
  • Check your home’s insulation for leaks and areas where cold can seep through.
  • Clean the coils on your outside unit, removing any leaves or other debris obstructing them.
  • Check refrigerant levels.
  • Schedule a professional checkup for your system while it is still early in the season.

Should I Cover My HVAC in Winter?

In the north, the main reason you might want to cover your AC is to shield it from the buildup of falling leaves or from snow and ice during the midwinter. Modern HVACs are fortified against the elements but that does not make them impervious. On the other hand, you must be careful about using covers.

Plastic covers or ones that restrict airflow can do more harm than good by containing moisture and promoting rust. In addition, watertight covers can make very appealing nests for small animals attempting to avoid the elements.
