We know there’s a lot of myths out there about oil heat and we want to let you know why it is a safe reliable service.

Myth: Oil Heat Always Costs More Than Gas Heat

Both oil and gas heat prices fluctuate from year to year, but oil heat has often been a less expensive alternative here in the northeast. According to American Energy Coalition, a survey conducted between 1987 and 2008 shows that oil heat was less expensive in New York 15 out of the 22 years surveyed. It performed even better in Massachusetts where it was less expensive in 20 out of 22 years.

Myth: Oil Heat is Not Clean

Not only is oil heat clean, it’s getting cleaner. That’s because of bioheat. According to the New York State Oil Heating Association, (NYOHA) oil heat is now 95 percent cleaner than it was 35 years ago. New technology has created a fuel with emissions levels that approach zero. EPA emissions ratings show that bioheat, which is included in all of Tragar’s oil deliveries, is one of the cleanest sources of fuel you can find. Because it’s so clean it’s not required to be regulated under the Clean Air Act.

Myth: Oil Heat Isn’t Safe

According to NYOHA, bioheat is not harmful to your health. The possibility of carbon monoxide being emitted into your home is extremely rare. The fuel is also not explosive. Even if you drop a lighted match into your fuel it won’t explode. It must be heated above 140 degrees first, which is the temperature at which it will begin to vaporize. You’ll be even safer if you have a modern fuel tank. That’s because the newer tanks are designed with corrosion-resistant materials that are more leak resistant than older models.
