Certified Oil Tank Abandonment

How is an Oil Tank Properly Abandoned?

Five steps need to be taken by a qualified company to ensure that an oil tank has been appropriately abandoned.

  1. The tank piping is disconnected from the furnace or heating system.
  2. The breather tube and fill pipe are removed or cut below grade and then sealed with concrete.
  3. The oil tank is cleaned out of any leftover oil and sludge.
  4. The oil tank is filled with sand or foam.
  5. The oil tank has been certified that it has been tested for leaks.

Tragar will file a notarized form with the Town when these steps are complete, certifying that the proper steps have been followed. The Certificate of Abandonment will need to be produced should you decide to sell your home. Mortgage companies wary of potential leaks will want to see the Certificate before underwriting a new mortgage. While proper abandonment is possible without the Certificate, it will be difficult if not impossible to prove and can delay the sale of your home.

When Should You Abandon an Oil Tank?

Homeowners should replace any oil tank that is over 20 years old. If your home was built in the 1930s through the 1970s, you should abandon your oil tank before it leaks. Oil leaks can be devastating for the environment, hazardous to residents and the local water supply, and cost thousands of dollars to rectify.

If your oil tank is placed on an unstable surface, standing on cinderblocks, in a confined space in your basement, or sealed in under your porch, it should be replaced.

When you get an oil delivery from Tragar, we can inspect your oil tank for you and advise on a potential replacement. Whether or not we replace your oil tank, we recommend installing new tanks in containment devices for increased safety.
