Why You Need a Whole-House Water Filter

August 24, 2015 by Dennis Traina

Water Filters by Tragar Home Services

You might not think you need a whole-house water filter because you think the water on Long Island is just fine or the water you drink is already filtered or bottled. Think again.

Long Island Water Quality Concerns

Unlike New York City residents who turn on their taps to find water that comes from upstate reservoirs, Long Island homeowners receive their water from underground aquifers. In recent years there’s been a growing concern about the Island’s water quality, and officials have urged local residents to not confuse good-tasting water with good-quality water.
According to local officials in a May 2012 CBS 2 news report, “Three million people live on Long Island, and there is no reservoir system. There’s no pumping water from below, filtering it and drinking it, and now studies show dramatic increases in run-off from lawn fertilizers and farming pesticides, household chemicals and pharmaceuticals down the drain, untreated septic tank sewage, and rapid unchecked over-development.”
Experts and water districts also expressed concern in the same report about growing pollutants below the surface that are impacting drinking water, beaches, bays, and harbors.
This is why in May 2014 the Long Island Clean Water Partnership (LICWP) called for action to protect and restore Long Island’s drinking water and water quality at local beaches, bays, rivers, and harbors in an ad campaign it launched, and in March 2015 lawmakers in Albany set aside $5 million in the New York state budget to fund the creation of a nitrogen pollution management and reduction plan for Long Island.

Reasons for Installing Whole-House Water Filters

Plumber's Choice Water Filtration System

However, as local lawmakers and other environmental organizations work to remedy the water situation, Long Islanders need to be able to protect their families. One surefire way to do that is by installing a whole-house water filtration system.
Whole-house water filters require no electricity, produce no water waste or salt, and have no batteries to change or clocks, timers, or controllers to reset. All they need are periodic filter changes, and they can be added to any water treatment system you currently have in your home.

Five Basic Categories Of Water Filtration Systems

  1. Disinfection Methods
  2. Filtration
  3. Reverse Osmosis
  4. Distillation
  5. and Ion exchange
