When Should You Call a Plumber?

June 24, 2019 by Dennis Traina

When to call a plumber
Even the most experienced DIYers call a plumber to handle certain types of problems but knowing when to do so isn’t easy. Some issues seem easy to fix but can be difficult or dangerous to tackle on your own. Here’s a list of reasons/problems that should only be repaired by professional plumbers.

Problems A Plumber Should Handle

Blocked Pipes

Slow or blocked drains are one thing, If a routine drainer cleaner doesn’t solve the issue, you should call a plumber instead of continuing on your own because the problem might actually be a blocked sewer line. Plumbers can discern if the issue is a tree root or something equally serious. DIY repairs on a broken, blocked or punctured sewer line could lead to complications that end up costing a lot more than a plumber and possibly even lead to raw sewage pouring into your home or property.

No Water

If nothing comes out when you turn on the faucet, check with your neighbors to see if they’re having the same problem. If they’re not, call a plumber immediately. Having no water can be a sign of a serious problem.

Low Water Pressure

Weak water flow can come from poor pipe design, water supply issues, pipe obstruction, etc. A professional plumber can diagnose the cause whereas DIY solutions could damage your incoming water pipes or home.

Limited or No Hot Water

Hot water problems could stem from the water heater completely failing to a minor component that needs to be replaced. Letting a plumber figure out which one is a safer idea, especially since amateur repair attempts could invalidate the water heater’s warranty. Additionally, water heaters involve either electric or gas power so mistakes could have severe consequences.

Burst Pipes

This is typically a winter problem when water freezes and expands, breaking pipes that then leak when water flow is re-established. Finding the location of the leak can be difficult and damage can be extensive. A plumber can find the leak more quickly, get to the damaged section more efficiently and can probably assess related issues, like foundation, drywall or flooring damage.

Home Renovation Projects

Adding, moving or modifying water and sewer lines is a big job. Do it incorrectly and you can have a flood – or a slow leak that causes hidden damage over time. A professional plumber is safer, faster, more efficient, and they’ll know what permits you may need, saving trouble down the line when you want to sell the house and need proper documentation.

Visible Water

When you find water pooling on a floor without a visible source or around a toilet, it’s probably a serious issue. Water stains on a ceiling mean a leak. In all of these cases, a professional plumber is your best choice to diagnose and fix the problem.

Colored Water

Water coming out of your faucets should be clear. When it’s not, it can signal a difficult problem. Brown or reddish brown water, often called “rusty water,” can be an indication of rust or a water heater problem. Blue or green water can mean corroding copper pipes. Replacing pipes is definitely a task for a professional plumber.

Hearing Water When You’re Not Using It

If you hear water moving through your pipes when you aren’t actually running any water, it means you have a leak somewhere. A professional plumber can find the source of the leak and repair far more quickly and efficiently than an amateur can.
Don’t make a serious problem worse by trying to fix it yourself. If you experience any of these problems, call Tragar immediately. Our plumbing experts will figure out what’s wrong and fix it quickly and efficiently. Contact us today.
