Summer Guide to Energy Efficiency in 2018
The weather is getting warmer and soon you’ll be seeing sweltering summer heat almost every day. You’ll be spending a lot of time trying to stay cooler. This time of the year you’ll also hear about energy efficiency and making sure you don’t waste energy costing yourself money in the process. Energy efficiency is something you should keep in mind all year round, and one reason for that is because efforts to save energy are working.

According to the Miami Herald, the US has put together nine straight years of economic growth, while keeping energy consumption flat. In 1990, more than 9,000 BTUs of energy were consumed for each real dollar of growth in the US economy. Last year, that number dropped to 6,000 BTUs per each real dollar of growth. As time passes, Americans are becoming more energy savvy, and Tragar Home Services wants to help you stay on top of your energy efficiency this summer.

Since we want you to stay cool and energy conscious this summer, we want to give you some tips on improving your energy efficiency.

Recommendations From the Energy Department

We mentioned air conditioning maintenance and annual startup, and according to the US Department of Energy, regular maintenance is important for optimal energy efficiency. In order to operate efficiently, your system needs to run properly. It’s important that you clean your air-conditioning filters regularly and hire a professional to do regular maintenance. You should also vacuum registers regularly to get rid of dust buildup.
Another way to improve on being energy efficient is to be certain that you operate your thermostat efficiently. The Energy Department recommends that you keep your home warmer than normal when you’re away and lower the thermostat to 78 degrees only when you’re home. One way to stay on top off your thermostat settings is to purchase a programmable thermostat like the Nest thermostat available from Tragar. You should avoid setting your thermostat cooler than normal when you arrive home.
A great way to improve energy efficiency is to use your fans strategically. Always turn off your fan off when you leave a room because fans don’t cool rooms, just people. If you have ceiling fans, turn them on when you operate your air conditioning system. This will allow you to raise your thermostat about 4 degrees and still feel cool. Also, we recommend you avoid using hot ovens on hot days. Use the microwave if you can.
