It’s OK to repair.” The 10-year, $5,000 rule is a good rule of thumb, but you should also know that if you have a really old system like one created in the 1970s you’re losing out on energy efficiency.
Another thing you should monitor is how often you need to top off your coolant. If you need to replace your coolant often, that can be an indicator that there’s a leak. This is one of the warning signs that you need to replace your air conditioner. Refrigerant replacement can be expensive and replacing a compressor, which can cost up to $2,000, may not be worth it.
According to Energy Star, other signs you should watch for is a noisy cooling system, which could be an indicator that there’s a problem with the coil of your system or if you have rooms which are too warm or too cold. This could mean you have equipment problems or issues with your ducts. Leaky ducts can cause your home to be more humid. It can also be the reason why you may be seeing excessive dust in your home. If your energy bills are going up, you may be using a system that isn’t energy efficient.
