So far this winter has brought record cold and historic snow to much of the United States. Hiding inside, away from the chill, is the strategy of choice. Of course, avoiding the cold is hard to do if you run out of heating oil.
What Happens If My Heating Oil Runs Out?
Obviously, your furnace will stop functioning but – on the bright side – running empty won’t damage your furnace, it just will not provide heating. Heating units have hardware safety measures that disable the burner if there is no flame being generated.
Running out of home heating oil is no picnic… even during the summer months. Without it, there is no hot water for washing or bathing. In the winter it can be flat out dangerous. If you find yourself running out, call us to schedule an emergency delivery in order to keep your family and pets safe and warm.
What to Do If Your House Runs Out of Oil?
If you find yourself in the unenviable position of running out of heating oil, there are four steps to take:
- Make sure that you are actually out of heating oil by checking the gauge on your oil tank.
- Order oil!
- Add 5 or 10 gallons of diesel fuel to your tank to hold you over until heating oil is delivered.
- Hit the reset button on your fuel oil burner.
What to Do If Your Oil Tank Is Empty?
If you have run out of home heating oil, you will possibly need to get a professional HVAC tech to come in and bleed the oil line. This will get rid of impurities that have settled into the line when the oil ran dry.
If this isn’t done, these impurities can block the fuel lines or cause even more expensive damage to your furnace. This is usually not needed unless your furnace refuses to restart after being filled. Keep in mind that this can cost extra, but you’ll have a pro on-hand to consult if it does not eliminate the problem.
