Older home interiorAlthough it seems that older houses are being knocked down on Long Island and replaced with more modern homes all the time… most Long Island residents aren’t living in newly built houses. After all, Long Island helped to start the post-war suburban boom with Levittown.

There’s a lot of character in older homes and, for many who keep homes in their family, a lot of precious memories are tied to them as well. That said, owning an older home is not without its difficulties.

One of the issues many older homes have are being able to comfortably heat and cool the whole house. So, what is the most efficient and effective way to do so?

How to Heat a Large Old House Efficiently?

When you’re looking to keep an old house warm, part of that is figuring out how to keep the heat from escaping. Older homes lose about 25% of their heat through the roof, 35% through the walls, another 25% through the windows, and just 15% through the floors.

Heavy curtains for the windows and large throw rugs for the floors during the winter months can help you keep the heat in your home from escaping. More modest home restoration – such as insulating the roof and new windows – could be a major improvement as well, as opposed to insulating the walls… which could quickly become a more costly venture.

Older homes tend to be designed for individual room heating, which leads to parts of the house that heat more efficiently than others. Heat pumps are a great cost-efficient solution to getting heat into the rooms that need it most.

What Is The Best Way To Cool An Old House?

Unfortunately, an old house can both be difficult to heat and cool down. There are ways you can keep your older home cooler, however.

Keeping the air circulating by keeping doors and windows open when you can, not using lights that emit heat during the day, and avoid using the stove and other heat-emitting appliances when possible. You can also use your exhaust fans to move heat out of the bathroom and kitchen, and make sure you’re using bedding that won’t retain the heat as well so you can be cooler at night.

That said, HVAC experts can evaluate your home and work with you on the best options to keep your home cool. Ductless air conditioning is a great example of a system that can help cool rooms in your home down without needing ductwork.
