Ductless mini split on a paneled wallA mini split is a heating and cooling system that requires no ductwork and instead moves air with an outdoor compressor serving one or more indoor air handling units. Mini splits may be used in new construction and additions… or may be retrofitted onto older homes. Each indoor unit has separate controls, allowing for individualized temperature settings in each space.

Mini split systems have many advantages – they are quiet, easy to install, easy to clean, energy efficient, and do not require ductwork. Perhaps their biggest benefit is their impact on your home’s air quality.

Do Ductless Mini Splits Improve Air Quality?

When properly maintained, mini splits significantly improve air quality in your home. One obvious advantage is that they don’t have a system of ducts to trap and recirculate contaminants.

They also function as dehumidifiers – removing moisture in your air that can cause musty smells, mildew, or mold. This is particularly advantageous in small or damp spaces like bathrooms, basements, or laundry rooms. Mini splits contain filters that remove impurities from your air and some even have built-in ultraviolet lights to kill microorganisms.

Do Mini Splits Have HEPA Filters?

Mini split units may use HEPA filters to remove mold, pathogens, dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens from your air. Depending on your system, there may be other types of filters also available – such as carbon, nano, enzyme, or antimicrobial filters. Consult manufacturer’s specifications or ask a Tragar tech to determine which types of filters are compatible with your unit/s and how often they need to be cleaned or changed.

Do Ductless Mini Splits Bring in Fresh Air?

Much like conventional central air systems, a ductless mini split circulates, cools, and conditions the air that is already in your home. It does not bring in air from the outside, allowing the system to run quietly and efficiently. A mini split’s filtration system – when properly maintained – actually puts out air that is much cleaner than “fresh” air from outdoors.

Can Mini Splits Produce Carbon Monoxide?

Another advantage of mini split systems is that there is no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Since they run solely on electricity and operate in open areas with no enclosed ducts, there is no opportunity for dangerous gases to be produced… let alone accumulate.

Do Ductless Mini Splits Get Moldy?

Over time, a mini split system may accumulate dirt and debris in its coils and filters. This can lead to decreased efficiency and, even worse, toxic mold that can cause serious health complications. This can be especially problematic while the system is in air conditioning mode, so it is important to inspect and clean your system as recommended in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
