Preparing for a Power Outage

You can get through an emergency like a power outage a lot easier if you’re prepared. According to NBC News, the first thing you should do when you lose power is, report it to your power company. Even if the power is out on your entire block, you can’t assume your neighbors have reported the outage. Calling your utility company will very often result in being updated on the estimated time you’ll get electricity back.
But before your outage strikes, you need to prepare. If you know of a storm or other conditions that can create a power outage you should get ready by buying or making ice cubes in advance and freezing water containers as well, according to the Food and Drug Administration. This will help freeze food while you wait for the power to come back on. It’s also a good idea to keep an appliance thermometer in your refrigerator and make sure your freezer temperature is below zero in the freezer and 40 degrees in the refrigerator or food will spoil.

Staying Cool During an Outage

Once you’ve lost power, there are things you can do to keep things as cool as possible inside. HuffPost recommends:

• Keeping your blinds closed because up to 30 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows. If you own blackout curtains, you’ll keep out even more heat.
• Close the doors of unused rooms to preserve cool air that existed in rooms before the outage.
• Sleep on the lower floors of your home, because heat rises.
