Doing Annual Maintenance Will Keep Your Air Conditioner Running

Scheduling an annual appointment for maintenance and start up for your air conditioning system is strongly recommended by the US Department of Energy. “An air conditioner’s filters, coils, and fins require regular maintenance for the unit to function effectively and efficiently throughout its years of service,” they write on the Department website. “Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a steady decline in air conditioning performance while energy use steadily increases.”
There are routine maintenance checks homeowners can and should do to keep their system in good working order. One very important maintenance tip is to routinely clean your air conditioner filter and replace it when necessary. According to the energy department, clogged dirty filters block normal airflow and reduce energy efficiency. Having dirty air conditioning filters can lower your air conditioner’s energy efficiency by 5 to 15 percent.

Tragar Air Conditioner Maintenance Checklist

While monitoring your filter can go a long way towards keeping your system in top working order and peak energy efficiency, there are maintenance issues that usually require a professional. That’s why Tragar offers our annual air conditioner start-up. We provide the following services with our Air Conditioner Maintenance Checklist:

  • We’ll check your air conditioner’s belt tension. This keeps it’s motor running.
  • Check your CFM across your evaporator coils. CFM stands for cubic feet per minute and it measures the power of your unit’s air flow. Clogged evaporator coils can decrease air circulation.
  • Inspect your compressor contractor. The compressor is a pump that moves refrigerant from the evaporator to the condenser.
  • Drain condensate lines. Condensate lines remove the condensation that’s produced by your air conditioner. Clogged drains can prevent your unit from reducing humidity.
  • Check evaporator This is a way for our technicians to check whether too much or too little refrigerant is entering the evaporator.
  • Monitor operating pressure. Measuring the unit’s operating pressure will let you know if there’s a leak or if there’s an issue with the charging of your system.
  • Check the pressure switch setting. Pressure switches are safety switches which regulate how often your air conditioning unit cycles on and off.
  • Check voltage to meter and wiring. This will ensure that the unit is being powered properly.
  • Make sure drain lines are cleaned. This gets rid of potential mold buildup.
  • Lubricate all moving parts. We’ll make sure the unit’s parts are all in good working order.
